Rules and Details:

  • Stay safe.

  • Have fun.

  • Bring that old Squirrel Rifle, Grandpa’s Ugly Stick, your Uncle’s Click-Clack, or whatever other .22 rifle that you love, and throw some lead at steel targets.  The spirit of this match is more of a ‘backyard barbeque’ competition, than that of a serious match.

  • This is a fundraiser for the precision rimfire club.  There are no prizes.

  • There will be trophies for the top 3 finishers in each division, and some fun awards.

  • There will be 5-8 stages, with a maximum of 10 rounds per stage.  I would say that two boxes of ammo will cover sight-in and the match, but then it wouldn’t be bulk pack ammo!

  • We are offering additional points (see ‘score modifiers’ below) for donations of goods for the Marshall Public Library supply drive.  Every $10 worth of new, unopened goods is +1 point, with a maximum of +3.  But please do not hesitate to bring extra supplies. They benefit local children in local schools.  See accompanying flyer or list for more information, but the list of desired items is primarily made up of school supplies and hygiene items.

  • Mulligans are available, pre-paid only.

    • $20 per mulligan, maximum of 3 per shooter.

    • Must be paid in cash or Venmo at registration. No refunds.

    • Only one mulligan can be used per stage.

  • Rifles only. No handguns.

    • No semi-autos that do not have a safety.

    • Tube Magazines are allowed.

    • Chamber flags required. (Available at the match, if needed.)

    • Some loaner rifles may be available, if you don’t have anything that fits the rules and spirit of the match.

  • .22 LR, .22 Long, and .22 Short only.

    • .22 LR ammunition must be bulk pack ‘cheap crap’.

    • CCI Standard Velocity, CCI Blazer, Federal Champion / Game Shok RangePack, Aguila 38/40 gr Super Extra, Remington Thunderbolts [and variants], and most Winchester loads will qualify as “bulk pack”, even if in boxed form.

    • .22 Long and .22 Short are hard enough to get that any “basic” factory load should be acceptable. (No fancy match ammo for the .22 Short, like Eley Rapid Fire.)

  • Unless specified otherwise, standard NRL22 rules will apply to the match.

    • This match is not sanctioned by NRL22 - it just happens to be a rule set that the majority of our shooters know well.

  • Coaching on the clock IS ALLOWED and encouraged.

    • Help each other out, especially the iron sight shooters that have a limited field of view.

  • Single-shot shooters will have 120 second time limits per stage.  All other shooters get only 90 seconds. (Don’t worry, we’ve tested this. 90 seconds is plenty.)

  • Every shooter is responsible for staying safe and following all safety rules and commands.  Every shooter is also responsible for keeping everyone around them safe.  It is always better to call out a problem than to have someone make a major safety violation or have someone get injured.  Call out those near misses.  Don’t let them slide.

    • If we do not have volunteers for dedicated Safety Officers, each squad will need to have one of its members act as the Safety Officer responsible for keeping that squad safe. This includes our special rules for tube magazines and other types of actions and magazines not typically seen in rimfire competitions.

    • If necessary, squads will be rearranged to accomplish this.  Safety is #1.

  • Two divisions will be available:

    • Irons.

    • Iron sights.

    • Non-magnifying optics/dots will be allowed, but may be subject to a minor score modifier.

    • Scoped.

    • Some stages will have a “hit-to-move-on” target that is required for Scoped division, but not required for Irons.

    • NO DIALING ON THE CLOCK, except parallax.

  • All rifles need to be assessed for division, safety, special needs, and their score modifier at check-in. Make your modifier arguments count!

  • A score modifier will be in play, adding points to your overall score.

    • Match points plus the modifier, for final score.

    • Modifiers are (subject to change at judges’ discretion):

Examples of Setups and Scoring

  1. *Faithful reproductions of qualifying models are eligible for these points.  A model that comes to mind is the Rossi 62SA (and SAC and Taurus-branded variants). It is a faithful reproduction of the Winchester 62A, introduced in 1948.  The Rossi RP22 does not qualify.

  • Some examples of how this could work:

    1. Stevens 15A single-shot.

      • +5 (single-shot)

      • +1 (pre-1950 design)

      • +2 (made pre-1950)

      • +3 (.22 Short)

  • +11 total bonus match points

  • Final match score of 31.  31 + 11 = 42

  1. Ruger 10/22 w/ 4x Tasco scope and no mods.

    • +0 (it’s the baseline rifle with nothing special)

    • +2 ($20 in goods donated)

  • +2 total points

  • Final match score of 53. 53 + 2 = 55

  1. Ruger 10/22 w/ irons, VQ trigger, 12 pound chassis taking it to 14.x lbs.

    • -2 (over 9 lbs)

    • -5 (every pound over 9 lbs)

  • -7 total points

  • Final match score of 53. 53 - 7 = 46

  • Tube magazines should be loaded with only the number of rounds required for the stage.

    • All stages will be 10 rounds or less.

    • The last “round” loaded will be a dummy cartridge, to aid as a visual indicator that there should be no more rounds in the magazine.

      1. These are not snap caps. They are not designed to have firing pin impacts and damage to the rims will cause jams.  Please avoid dry-firing with the dummies.

    • Tube magazines cannot be reloaded on the clock.  If your rifle can not hold 10 rounds or you have a stoppage that results in a round lost, you either live with the lost opportunity or safely hand-feed into the chamber (if even possible).

    • Tube magazines should be cleared before leaving your final shooting position on a stage. This should be by sending extra rounds down range at the command of the R.O. until mag is empty.

      1. On the command from the Range Officer, “Unload and show clear!”:

      2. Be it prone, on a prop, whatever; just stay there, with the muzzle pointed down range at a berm, and cycle any remaining rounds out such that the Safety Officer can see it.  At that point, move on to the full safety check below.

    • Tube magazine inner tubes / followers will be checked for stuck rounds before the rifle will be chamber-flagged and considered clear.  This means removing the inner tube / follower from the rifle, if the follower is not clearly visible with the action open or through a loading port.

      1. If you have any questions about this, just ask.  It isn’t very complicated for most tube mag rifles.

      2. Do not put your hand in front of the muzzle.

      3. Do not point the rifle at the concrete pad.

      4. With the action empty and safe, point the rifle upward or down range and safely remove the inner tube / follower.

      5. Dump any remaining live rounds, if necessary

      6. Ensure that there are no live rounds stuck in the inner tube / follower.

      7. Re-insert the inner tube / follower

      8. Use common sense to then visibly verify that the rifle is empty. (This, obviously, varies quite a bit by model.)

      9. Chamber flag the rifle.

      10. If you have any questions about this, just ask.  It isn’t very complicated for most tube mag rifles.

  • All scoring disputes, rules violation challenges, and any other type of judgement necessary for safety or points will be decided by the match directors present.  If the dispute includes or affects one of the Match Directors, the decision will be up to the remaining MDs.  Even if not yet officially recognized by the board of directors, Robert Pedersen and Preston Fuss will be considered Match Directors for this match, for scoring and safety disputes.
